Nikolaj Lund is trying to change the face of classical music one photograph at a time. Lund’s portraits of classical musicians display the lesser-shown, quirkier side of the stereotypically conservative genre. His photography trades in the stoic, drama-driven image of a pianist for a wild one of a cellist thrusting his instrument into a sand dune.

“Music is something you hear, feel and respond to. For me it can calm me down and at the same time wake a lot of energy and inspiration in me,” the Denmark-based artist said. “So the combination of aesthetic shades and raw energy is what I often try to show in my photos.”

Hey all,

If you’ve got some spare time, please sign this petition to save the Australian National University’s School of Music. It’s not just so I will get a Bachelor out of it (even though that’s looking more unlikely by the day) - it’s more of the fact that there are many staff who have become my mentors and friends, who will be without a salary and will have to relocate. The wholesale slaughter of *ALL* the jobs at the SoM is illegal and short-sighted. And the changes won’t stop here if allowed to continue. Pretty soon, every music institution in the country will close and the arts/humanities will go next.

I don’t mean to be *that person* that posts self-centered wank on my tumblr, but this means more to me than anything else. It’s a case of choosing a profession and being struck with the blatant realisation that I could work my ass off for 30 years, as the teaching staff at the ANU have been, get permanent tenure granted, only to have it all taken away from me in a fit of narrow-minded fiscal frenzy.
